Welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Michigan State University. This is a place where teaching, research, outreach, and engagement work together in ways that will enable your success, as well as institutional success. We have been enjoying a fulfilling academic year, with all the rewarding experiences and opportunities associated with being on campus together as a community of scholars. As we prepare for the start of next semester, we look forward to you joining us

New Faculty and Academic Staff Orientation is an expectation for all new full-time academics who are contracted for 90% time or greater for two or more semesters, including tenure system faculty, librarians, health programs faculty, FRIB/NSCL faculty, fixed-term faculty (teaching-focused faculty), academic specialists in the continuing system, fixed-term academic specialists, and senior research associates. Others who are in these roles at reduced appointment levels are invited, but not required, to attend.

The August 2024 New Faculty and Academic Staff Orientation will be conducted in person – details will be posted soon:

  1. Modules for Orientation Completion: All new academics can access Desire to Learn (D2L) modules that provide essential information, including resources from various campus offices and important policies and procedures using this self-enroll link will be provided within invitation.
  2. Virtual Information Fair: The Virtual Information Fair will allow you the opportunity to learn about many MSU offices and resources. Human Resources representatives will be available to answer any questions you may have about your benefits and MSU Federal Credit Union representatives will also be available to answer questions about banking, mortgages, and other financial matters. Questions can be posted for either unit on the discussion board within the D2L site.
  3. Important Resources and Follow-Up Opportunities: Throughout the semester, visit the New Faculty and Academic Staff Orientation page for supplemental orientation resources and workshops. Other professional development opportunities can be found on our main OFASD events webpage. If teaching is part of your spring appointment, you will want to be sure to attend the “Jumpstart Sessions” January 4th and January 10th that will assist you in navigating the first weeks of instruction.
