Welcome to MSU! – presented by the MSU WorkLife Office

If you are new or returning to Michigan State University, the Greater Lansing area, Michigan, or the United States, the WorkLife Office can help connect you to campus and community resources. Even if you aren’t new to the area, the Office has plenty of ways to help you locate the resources you need and become connected to your colleagues and your community.
This webinar is geared toward newcomers at MSU. MSU is a large place and the MSU WorkLife Office is here to help you navigate it! This webinar will serve as an introduction to the WorkLife Office and will include information about things to do at MSU, and in the greater community.

Active Violence Incident (AVI) Awareness
We are pleased to inform you that one of those measures, our new Active Violence Incident, or AVI, Awareness training, has been finalized and is ready for Spartans to complete. This course is available and strongly recommended for all students, faculty and staff and can be accessed on MSU’s Ability Training platform.
You can access the AVI Awareness training by logging in with your MSU NetID and password. Once logged in, click the Launch button to begin the course.
The training is managed by the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety and includes a presentation explaining how to respond during an active violence situation. Throughout the training, knowledge checkpoint questions will appear on screen to evaluate participants’ understanding of the content. In addition, a video is in development, which will be included in the training at a later time. Once the video is complete, it will be added to the training platform as well as to the MSU DPPS website.
We understand that this training may be difficult for some to complete following the violence our community experienced. Keeping this in mind, community members are encouraged to complete it on their own time, at the time that works best for them.
In addition to the online training, the department still offers in-person training for students, faculty and staff. To request in-person training, please visit the MSU DPPS website.
During an active violence incident, it is important to know your options. Active violence incidents are unpredictable and there is no single correct way to respond. The more that you mentally rehearse, the more likely you are going to be able to react. This online training serves as a necessary tool to help you stay educated, informed and safe.

Teaching and Learning Professional Development Opportunities
Throughout the year, opportunities will be available through the new Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation [CTLI]. The Center is MSU’s first dedicated teaching center with a goal to help educators across all disciplines when they need advice, feedback, coaching, guidance, or to find resources at the university. CTLI helps MSU’s educators improve their understanding of teaching and learning, develop themselves as more capable educator, and improve their teaching performance or learning experience design. Contact CTLI to talk through your needs, and how we might help directly or connect you with the resources you are seeking.

Academic Career Conversations
Starting an academic career involves new opportunities to learn, connect with others, and make meaningful contributions–to share one’s excitement about one’s field with learners, to advance the knowledge base, and to use one’s expertise to address pressing issues in the broader society.
Faculty and academic staff in all appointment types are invited to attend. The Conversations are intended to be no-pressure, enjoyable opportunities to meet others at your career stage, learn about resources, and be welcomed more fully into the university community. The Conversations will be facilitated by Marilyn Amey, Assistant Provost for Faculty and Academic Staff Development. Please join us!

Join a Learning Community
Learning Communities, formerly known as Faculty Learning Communities, are ongoing discussion groups that allow MSU colleagues to gather from across departments in order to develop their skills (and even create new resources) related to a specific teaching and learning topic.
Continuing to Connect- Future Topics
To provide support for instruction throughout the year, we will offer subsequent opportunities for ongoing discussion for faculty and academic staff, and highlight on our OFASD events page valuable engagement opportunities offered by our campus partners. Additional topics for engagement will include Formative and Summative Assessment, Handling Difficult Topics and Classroom Discussions, Using New Classroom Learning Tools and Strategies, and Writing a Compelling Narrative That Documents Your Work.
