In a year full of change, we have high hopes for the insight and development of the 2020-21 fellowship cohorts. While it’s easy to understand the desire for some to ride out the changes already underway during a year in a pandemic, these individuals have risen to the call of fellowship opportunities and the dedication to make an impact within the campus community.

Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program Fellows

The Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program (ALP), provides intensive leadership and managerial development, addressing the challenges of academic administration at major research universities like tightening budgets, changing student populations, and increasing pressures from external sources. Many of the program’s nearly 1,000 fellows have gone on to serve as college presidents, provosts, and deans. This year’s fellowship recipients are:

  • Maria Isabel Ayala, Associate Professor and Director, Chicano/Latino Studies, College of Social Science
  • Peter Berg, Professor and School Director, College of Social Science
  • Joanna Bosse, Professor and Associate Dean, Residential College in the Arts and Humanities
  • Bethan Cantwell, Director of Institutional Research, Office of Planning and Budgets
  • Glenn Chambers, Professor and Associate Dean, Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Studies, College of Social Science
  • Kirsten Tollefson, Professor and Associate Dean, The Graduate School

AAN Leadership Fellows

The AAN Leadership Fellows program creates partnerships between mentors (current administrators) and fellows. This program involves both a shadowing experience and work on a project developed jointly between the mentor and fellow.

This year-long experience is open to faculty and academic staff who are interested in learning about diverse leadership roles. This year’s cohort includes:

Adams Academy Fellows

The Adams Academy Fellowship program brings together a cross-disciplinary group of faculty and academic staff for a year-long fellowship focused on teaching and learning. Adams Academy Fellows explore the literature on effective university teaching and learning practices and consider how this robust body of research can guide instructional decisions in the courses they teach. Participants learn from and contribute to a community of teacher-scholars committed to excellence in teaching and learning. This year’s cohort includes:

Lilly Fellows

The goal of the 2020-2021 Lilly Fellowship program is to develop academic leaders who will guide the university into the near future with regard to learning, teaching, and educational programming. Participants focus their work on a project of their choosing that will make a substantial contribution to a unit’s educational efforts. The unit can be a program or a department, but it can also be a college or a university unit or initiative. Using the proposed project as a foundation, participants will also learn leadership concepts and models, build specific skills, learn more about how the university works, and practice what they learn through the activities of their project and small group mentoring and coaching. This year’s Lilly Fellows include:
