Each February, the Academic Advancement Network in collaboration with Academic Human Resources hosts its annual series of “Thriving at Michigan State University” workshops. These sessions provide faculty and academic specialists with important information and strategies on how to be successful in their careers at our institution.  The content of each workshop is specifically tailored for the specific needs of those in each appointment type.

The “Thriving in the Tenure System I: Articulating Your Scholarly Identity through a Strong Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Packet” workshop will be held on February 4, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in room B106/107 at the MSU Henry Center for Executive Management.  This workshop was created to inform probationary tenure system faculty about the reappointment, promotion, and tenure process, assist them with tracking their accomplishments throughout their career and preparing the documentation for the RPT process and provide a platform to ask questions that they may have. Probationary tenure system faculty at Michigan State University can register for this workshop by January 28, 2020. Thriving in the Tenure System II is offered in alternating years to tenure system Associate Professors preparing for promotion to Professor. The next session will be offered in February 2021.

The “Thriving as an Academic Specialist at Michigan State University” workshop will be held on February 11, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room at the MSU University Club.  This workshop is designed for all Academic Specialists on campus including both fixed-term and continuing system specialists. This unique workshop will review the history of the specialist system, clarify the different appointment types and the promotional opportunities associated with the specialist system, and review the promotion process and the related documentation.  Following the main session, two rounds of breakout sessions based on appointment type will be offered, including one specifically for fixed-term specialists.  These breakout sessions will give attendees the opportunity to ask questions that are specialist type-specific.  Academic Specialists that are interested in participating can register by February 4, 2020.

The “Thriving as a Fixed-Term Faculty Member at Michigan State University” workshop will be held on February 18, 2020, from 8:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. in the Heritage Room at the MSU University Club.  This workshop was developed for Michigan State University’s fixed-term faculty, including Health Programs and FRIB faculty. This session will emphasize the growing need for fixed-term faculty in higher education, clarify the appointment systems and the promotional opportunities available to fixed-term faculty, provide strategies to aid in a successful career including tracking accomplishments and mentoring, and offer a forum to answer questions.  Michigan State University’s fixed-term faculty can register for this workshop by February 11, 2020.
