Executive Leadership Academy Seminar Series


Strong leadership is essential for organizational success. Michigan State University is pleased to offer the Executive Leadership Academy (ELA), which provides opportunities for high quality cross-campus leadership development and dialogue. Activities are free of charge to all participants.

The ELA program consists of this seminar series, as well as a year-long cohort program for support staff, directors, and/or supervisors in non-academic units.  It was honored with the Best Practices Award from the Midwest College and University Professional Association for Human Resources. This award is presented to an individual or team who demonstrates creativity, process improvements, excellence, or professional achievement within a functional area of human resources (either an entire HR unit or smaller subunit).


ELA seminars are open to executive managers, deans, directors, chairs, and supervisors, level 15-17.  These workshops are designed to provide opportunities for high quality cross-campus leadership development and dialogue.  They address core leadership competencies in half- and full-day facilitated sessions.

Team Accomplishment through Effective Meetings and Decision Making

Have you ever attended a team meeting and walked away feeling that nothing was accomplished  or wondering what the point was?  Have you ever been a part of a team where decisions rarely get made and when they do, no one is quite sure what should happen next?

The success of any organization, and the teams within it, succeeds or fails based on the quality of its decisions and how they are implemented.    This interactive workshop will focus on building high-quality decisions through an exploration of the techniques of decision management, starting with producing efficient meetings. . Participants will learn what creates effective and ineffective decisions and how to both effectively and efficiently manage the decision process.

Decision making will be explored within the context of running efficient meetings and leading high-quality teams. Based on research of the Meeting Masters Research Project at the University of Michigan, participants will be provided with a conceptual framework for efficient meetings and learn the recipe for producing such meetings using a variety of techniques and best practices of people who run excellent meetings (where decisions are made, the decisions are of high quality, and people actually enjoy going!).

This framework will also be supported by Google’s work on teams and managers.   Drawing on the empirical work of  Google  (Project Aristotle),  and the Oxygen Project, participants will learn what outlines a successful team and how the same principles of decision making can be applied to show significant accomplishment in a variety of venues.

Have you recently become a leader on campus in your department, your unit, or division? Are looking to gain a strong foundation for success?  Or, perhaps you are a seasoned veteran looking to enhance your leadership capabilities as you seek to take your department and team to the next level strategically?  This workshop is aimed at helping you assess and develop your leadership and coaching capabilities as you seek to create and advance key performance indicators for yourself, your team, and your department. Participants will complete an online assessment through Leadership 2.0 (http://www.talentsmart.com/products/leadership-2.0/).  In the morning, we will review your results and discuss what they mean and how you can better leverage them.  In the afternoon, you will be given tools to help you be a more effective coach of your team members. Lessons learned, best practices, and strategies will be shared.

Leading with Emotional Intelligence

A strong leader ignites motivation and unleashes productivity creating an environment in which individuals want to ‘follow’.  A person with high emotional intelligence (EQ) has mastery in self-management and interpersonal dynamics.  Combine the two and the result is the EQ Leader! Attend this seminar and learn the link between leadership and emotional intelligence.

Specifically, we will focus on:

  • a case for emotional intelligence as a necessary leadership competency;
  • the linkage between EQ, retention, motivation and productivity;
  • the four competencies of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, social skill);
  • building skill as it relates to the four competencies of EQ; and
  • how to design an emotionally intelligent culture.
